The Most Amazing Positional Rook Sacrifice
- Panda Chess
Former world champion Veselin Aleksandrov Topalov has a very nice attacking style.
You’ve probably studied some of his games where he sacrificed an exchange, as he pretty much made a living by winning games featuring this sacrifice against top players.

But today’s game features a very rare topic, which is a positional rook sacrifice, i.e., to sacrifice a rook not to win the material back with a forcing move but to get a long-term advantage in return.
Such sacrifices (for stable compensation) are very rare as a rook is worth a lot of material.
Right after making the sacrifice, Topalov has 3 pawns for a rook but at a certain point he only gets 2 pawns for a rook yet he’s the one pushing for a win!
This game will teach us a lot of other important ideas like why rooks can be worthless without open files, the dangers of playing too solidly and the importance of having the initiative and a position that is easier to play.
