The Alapin Variation is a line in the Sicilian Defense that we reach after the moves 1.e4 c5 2.c3.

This is a variation that belongs to what we call the Anti-Sicilians, as it avoids the open variation (1.e4 c5 2.Nc3 followed by 3.d4), that very often leads to very sharp positions.

My Complete Opening Repertoire for Black here will cover all variations that White can play in the Sicilian Defense as I suggest playing 1…c5 against the King’s Pawn Opening.

So if you want to build a repertoire as Black playing the Sicilian Defense, you must know how to face the Alapin. This seemingly quiet variation has an idea to occupy the center with the e4 and d4-pawns, so Black has to play some accurate moves to avoid getting long term pressure.
