Magnus Carlsen Beats Hans Niemann
- Panda Chess
Besides being less active in classical chess, former world champion Magnus Carlsen continues to impress and winning most of the event he plays on.
This time it was the chess.com blitz and bullet event Speed Chess Championship, where Magnus showed his skills.
Magnus beat Alireza Firouzja in the finals by a clear margin (23.5 – 7.5), but probably the most exciting matchup of this event was the semi-final where he met American Grandmaster Hans Niemann.
An ambitious and controversial player
Niemann admitted to having cheated online in the past, although some players even suspect that he did it over the board as well.
Actually, Magnus Carlsen was part of the Carlsen-Niemann controversy, where Magnus withdrew from the 2022 Sinquefield Cup after losing to Niemann, and later on claimed that Niemann cheated.

Carlsen tried to avoid facing Niemann in future events, but the Speed Chess Championship, being a knockout event offered a chance for this matchup, which occurred in the semifinal.
Besides the controversy between these two players, it is nice to see Carlsen playing against a talented young player who claims to be a future world champion.
Carlsen won the match 17.5 - 12.5. I analyzed the 30 games from this match and found some very exciting and instructive moments that I would like to share with you.
