Learn How to Use Pawn Breaks in Your Games

  • Panda Chess

Hi,

The path of chess improvement can sometimes be challenging because a lot of different topics can be studied.

While it is not good to get overloaded with different ideas and rules, one idea that you should study at least once is that of a pawn break.

This idea derives from another more important concept which is the pawn structure, which simply put is how the pawns are placed on the board.

A pawn break aims to affect the pawn structure by attacking an enemy pawn.

Enough of theory. The important question is when you should aim for a pawn break.

That’s why I decided to cover common scenarios on which pawn breaks are useful by analyzing some model games.

Scenario 1: to open lines when your opponent is underdeveloped

White to play

In this position, Black still has to develop a lot of pieces. Before waiting for Black to play safe moves like Nd6 and 0-0-0, White went for a pawn break with 1.d5! opening the position to attack Black’s king.

Scenario 2: to gain squares for your pieces

White to play

In this tense position, White played a very deep pawn sacrifice by going 1.e5! and after 1…dxe5, White’s idea is to follow up with 2.f5!

Position after White plays f5

The position completely changed after White’s pawn break, which involved a pawn sacrifice.

White has more than enough compensation, since the e4-square is going to be great for White’s knights. White also plans to take on g6, opening the f-file for the queen and rook battery.

Scenario 3: To open the position for a final knockout

Whenever you have a dominant position and your opponent has no counterplay, build up your position as much as possible before going for the kill.

White to play

White has placed all of his pieces on good squares. The rooks on the g-file are ready to attack after White played g5!, opening lines to finish Black.
