Are Knights on the Rim Always Dim?

  • Panda Chess

You might have heard the old chess adage, "A knight on the rim is dim!" but have you ever truly explored why? In today's lesson, we take a deep dive into this.

Knights are short-range pieces. Their strength lies in their ability to control key central squares and to jump around the board quickly. When placed on the edge (the "rim"), knights lose a lot of their potential, controlling far fewer squares and becoming much less effective. That's why, more often than not, putting a knight on the side is considered a serious strategic mistake.

But like many things in chess, there are exceptions.
In this lesson, we'll not only learn why knights usually belong in the center but also study special situations where moving a knight to the edge can be an interesting decision.
